U.S. Coast Guard investigators are still trying to determine what happened in an accident at sea that left three sailors dead and one missing during the Newport to Ensenada yacht race, according to a news report.
Pieces of the 37-foot Aegean were found off the Coronado Islands and the bodies of three sailors – Kevin Eric Rudolph, 53, of Manhattan Beach; William Reed Johnson Jr., 57, of Torrance; and Joseph Lester Stewart, 64, of Bradenton, Fla. – were found. The ship’s skipper, Theo Mavromatis, is still missing and presumed dead.
The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office reported that Rudolph and Johnson died from blunt force trauma to the head and neck; the cause of death for Johnson was determined to be drowning. Investigators looking into the accident are theorizing that the Aegean may either have collided with a large freighter during the night or run aground on a rocky island.
