Linda Georgette Saunders was struck and killed by a hit and run driver in the early morning hours as she attempted to walk across the 210 freeway west of Ocean View Boulevard in La Crescenta, California. Investigators are still uncertain as to why the fifty-five year old woman was walking across the highway; her car was parked on the right shoulder of the road and appeared to be in operating condition. Nevertheless, Saunders did leave her car and attempted to cross four lanes of oncoming traffic just around dawn.
As she crossed the highway, she was struck by a 2009 Honda that left the scene without stopping. Fire fighters from Los Angeles County attempted to help the woman, but she died at the scene. The driver of the Honda later went to the Crescenta Valley police station to report the accident. The sixty-five year old woman claimed that she didn’t realize she’d hit anyone until she saw the damage to her car.
Police believe the woman’s story because she turned herself in within a reasonable timeframe of noticing the damage to her vehicle. The investigation into the incident is not complete, and an autopsy is being performed on Saunders in the hopes of getting more answers.
This case is similar to one that Callahan & Blaine successfully settled in Orange County, California. In that case two joggers were hit and paralyzed by a driver in the early morning hours. Attorney Daniel J. Callahan knew from previous experience that the intersection was dangerous and that the city of Dana Point, California had failed to do anything about it. Callahan & Blaine achieved a record-breaking $50 million settlement for the injured joggers, and convinced the city of Dana Point to make the highway safer for pedestrians.
