Callahan was selected for the honor based on his record-setting performance in the recent Dana Point joggers hit and run case. In that case, Callahan was able to negotiate a $50 million personal injury settlement for two mothers who were struck and paralyzed by an uninsured drunk driver while jogging along the Pacific Coast Highway. The settlement in this case has been certified by West Trial Digest as the largest personal injury settlement in the history of the United States.
According to the magazine, the case “did not, at first glance, appear anything like a record-setting case;” a fact which had put off several attorneys initially approached by the families. But Callahan “happened to know the bike lane was unsafe,” based on an earlier case he had settled on behalf on a bicyclist injured on the same stretch of highway.
Callahan stated that “I believe our success in this and other catastrophic personal injury cases lies in our unique approach. We handle personal injury cases like complex business litigation cases, attacking them from every possible angle. We win by being persistent, thorough and relentless.”
Since the settlement, the city of Dana Point has since installed a wall to separate joggers and cyclists from car traffic.
