The California Medical Board has revoked the medical license of an Irvine doctor for overprescribing pain and anxiety medication to a patient who died of an overdose, according to a news report.
Dr. Darlush Javanshir was disciplined by the board in the May 2007 overdose death of an unidentified patient. Javanshir had prescribed 720 tablets of the narcotic painkiller propoxyphene and 330 tablets of the anti-anxiety medication lorazepam the month prior to the patient’s overdose. The board concluded that Javanshir had committed gross negligence by prescribing a large quantity of the drugs “to an addicted, suicidal patient for future use.” Javanshir told the board that he had prescribed a large amount of medication because the patient said he was planning to go overseas for an extended period of time.
Javanshir had been disciplined by the board in 1995 for excessively prescribing addictive drugs, and again in 2004 for failing to keep proper medical records.
