Dr. Van H. Vu, a Huntington Beach pain doctor at the California Pain Center, is the target of a complaint filed by the Medical Board of California, which alleges the physician caused the death of three patients through the negligent prescription of powerful narcotics, according to a news report.
The medical board complaint said that Vu was “grossly negligent” in the deaths of a 22-year-old woman, a 43-year-old man and a 51-year-old man who were all prescribed addictive painkillers that eventually led to their deaths. In addition, Vu is accused of failing to monitor his patients, often escalating dosages of the narcotic painkillers and prescribing medication in dangerous combinations.
The board is seeking to have Vu’s medical license suspended or revoked. He is also accused of implanting stolen medical equipment into a patient. A 2012 investigation by the Los Angeles Times implicated Vu in 17 patient deaths due to overdoses of prescription medication.
