Nine construction workers have been injured, three critically, in a Highway 91 construction accident, according to a news report.
The Riverside County Transportation Commission said that the nine workers were injured after a new section of highway that was being lowered into place over East Grand Boulevard in Corona suddenly dropped, hitting wooden support beams that then struck the workers. All of the injured workers are employed by Atkinson Walsh Construction Joint Venture.
Transportation commission officials said something went wrong with the jacking operation that caused the bridge deck to drop more than a foot. The deck hit wooden support beams, which then hit the workers.
The accident is being investigated by the RCTC, Atkinson Walsh and the California Occupation Safety and Health Administration.
