The city of Costa Mesa has hired a private investigator to look into the alleged suicide of city employee Huy Pham, who plunged to his death from the roof of City Hall on March 17, according to a news report.
Several City Council members reportedly expressed concern that the City does not know everything it needs to know about Pham’s death in case of a lawsuit. Pham’s death came on the same day the City was distributing six-month layoff notices to nearly half of their full-time employees. Pham’s supervisor said that Pham was aware he was one of the employees who would be receiving a notice.
According to the Coroner’s Office, Pham had cocaine in his system at the time of his death. No one saw Pham jump from the roof, but police investigators concluded that he committed suicide, even though they were unable to find any notes or other documentation that he had the intention to commit suicide.
