A 58-year-old woman being treated for cancer at Newport Beach’s Hoag Hospital may lose her breasts because of a flaw in a new Xoft Inc. radiation system at the hospital, according to a news report.
The unidentified woman was undergoing treatment to her left breast when a shield used with the system shed tiny tungsten particles throughout her chest. Doctors are now recommending that both her breasts be removed.
The device, the XOFT/ICAD Axxent Flexishield Mini, is supposed to protect body parts from unwanted doses of radiation during the use of the Axxent Brachytherapy System. The woman’s attorney estimates that 27 to 40 women have been treated with the device in Orange County. The manufacturer recalled the device last month.
