A recently released report by Transportation for America says that nearly 2,500 pedestrians were killed in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metro area from 2000 to 2009, making it the 27th most dangerous place in the nation for pedestrians, according to a news report.
California ranks as the 16th deadliest state for pedestrians, according to the report, with a total of 6,957 pedestrian deaths from 2000 to 2009. The report says that the neglect of pedestrian safety in the design and use of American roadways has resulted in more than 47,000 pedestrian deaths and 688,000 injuries nationwide from 2000 to 2009.
The report states that a majority of the pedestrian deaths nationwide have something in common: they occurred along “arterial roadways that were dangerous by design, streets engineered for speeding traffic with little or no provision for people on foot, in wheelchairs or on bicycles.”
