William “Alex” Williamson, a 59 year old Virginia Department of Forestry employee, was driving his SUV with three passengers when an unidentified metal object glanced off the highway and crashed through the windshield of his car, striking him in the head. Alex was struck unconscious, and the front-seat passenger struggled for the next five miles to stop the vehicle, which was on cruise control. The two passengers in the backseat were also injured when the object flew into the backseat after hitting Alex.
Alex was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries sometime later. The object that struck him was described as an aluminum disk of about three feet in diameter. Investigators have confirmed that the object very likely came from the road, and are working with the Department of Transportation to determine how it came to be there.
