John Fisher was driving with his wife, Jo Maureen Fisher, along Interstate 20 near the Alabama / Georgia State line when a piece of road debris crashed through the windshield of their car and struck Mrs. Fisher in the head. The debris was reportedly kicked up when a truck hit a pothole in the road ahead of the couple’s car. The truck apparently loosened a rock from the pothole and sent it flying through the Fishers’ windshield.
Mrs. Fisher, who lived with her husband in Goose Creek, South Carolina, was taken by emergency responders to UAB hospital where she was listed in critical condition. The thirty-three year old died the next day. Her family wanted the public to know that Jo Maureen was an organ donor and that her death will help save the lives of other people.
It is hard to be reminded how fragile life is and how it can change in an instant due to something as seemingly harmless as a pothole. Certainly the state of Alabama will have some explaining to do about the road conditions that led to Mrs. Fisher’s death.
