A study conducted over the summer by the California Office of Traffic Safety has found that more Californians are driving with drugs in their system than alcohol, according to a news report.
The first-of-its-kind roadside survey was conducted over two weekends during the summer, when researchers waved over motorists and asked them to take a short survey, do a breath test and provide a saliva sample anonymously for $20. More than 1,300 drivers agreed to participate.
Tests showed that 14 percent of the drivers had at least one drug in their system, with more than half testing positive for marijuana. In addition, 7.3 percent of the drivers tested positive for alcohol, most well below the 0.08 legal limit. Almost 25 percent of those that had alcohol in their system also tested positive for at least one drug.
