A 17-year-old Costa Mesa boy died after being pulled from a burning garage apartment, according to a news report.
Luke Upton died in a fire that officials believe began in a garage that had been turned into an apartment. Four other people escaped unharmed; an 18-year-old and a two-year-old were taken to a local hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
The Orange County Coroner’s Office said that an autopsy conducted on Upton was inconclusive and that further tests were needed to determine a cause of death. Costa Mesa fire officials said they were awaiting information from the Costa Mesa building department to determine if the garage had been legally converted into living space.
