A 28-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both residents of Costa Mesa, have died after their car was involved in a crash on the 57 Freeway.
The California Highway Patrol said that the couple was in a Toyota Corolla traveling south on 57 when the driver, identified as Eduardo Lins Goncalves, hit the rear of a flatbed tow truck that was on the shoulder helping with a disabled vehicle. A Toyota Tacoma driven by Vincent de la Vegas, 20, of Santa Ana, then crashed into the Corolla, which caused both occupants to be ejected.
The unidentified female passenger in the Corolla died at the scene. Goncalves was taken to a local trauma center, where he later died. De la Vega was later arrested on suspicion of DUI, and suffered bruising to his chest and fractured ribs as the result of the collision.
