Two people have been killed and two others were seriously injured after a minor traffic accident turned into a major tragedy on the 60 freeway in Diamond Bar, according to a news report.
The California Highway Patrol reported that a box truck and a big-rig got into a minor collision on the eastbound 60 freeway west of Phillips Ranch Road in Diamond Bar. The driver of the box truck – Gregory Swiney, 46, of Norco – and the big-rig driver – Constantino Olmos, 53, of Riverside — pulled over onto the shoulder of the freeway to exchange insurance information.
Swiney, his two passengers and Olmos were standing between the two trucks on the shoulder of the freeway when a third truck rear-ended the parked big rig, causing it to lurch forward and crush three of the four people between the two parked vehicles.
Swiney was declared dead at the scene; one of his passengers – Arnold Hutchinson, 40, of Mira Loma – was taken to a local hospital with major injuries and died the next day at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Olmos sustained major injuries and was taken by helicopter to Los Angeles County USC Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. The fourth person – a passenger in Swiney’s truck – was able to jump to safety and was not injured.
The driver of the third truck – Emilio Alvarez, 23, of South Gate – was treated at San Dimas Community Hospital.
